Fiji Honeymoon Guide Where to Go, When to Visit and What It Costs

Fiji Honeymoon Guide: Where to Go, When to Visit and What It Costs

Visiting Fiji on a honeymoon is easy to imagine but hard to plan. In fact, the country boasts over 300 islands, from backpacker bures to private-island retreats, and nearly all properties offer seclusion. The real question is: which island group, what time of year, how many nights, and how much you can afford to spend to get there.

This guide explains those decisions and provides some sample itineraries and answers to the most commonly asked questions. The pricing, resort policies, and transfer schedules are subject to change and should be used as a guide only – please check before booking.

Is Fiji a good destination for a honeymoon?

Fiji is ideal for couples who want privacy, warm water, and time for doing very little. There are no crowds, and resorts are on their own islands or small bays, and some have bungalows that are available to adults only and private beach dining. Easy to add snorkelling and diving to it, and if you want, there’s a cultural side.

But the compromises are true. After a long flight, you will be transferred to the best resorts via small aircraft. There aren’t many times when you would be able to dine by the night away in a hotel, and the better end of the market is costly. If you are looking for a city, nightlife, or a lot of independent restaurants, then Fiji is not the right place.

When to go

Fiji is hot, hot, hot year-round, with average temperatures of approximately 26 to 30C as per one of the honeymoon guides. The dry season is from May to October, when the humidity is lower, and rainfall is less. The wetter months (November to April) mean more rain and the possibility of cyclone activity that may hinder boat transfers as well as sometimes resort closures. This is relevant if you are on an island for a prolonged time.

May and October are good shoulder months to pick, with fewer crowds and good weather. The school holidays in Australia and New Zealand are a hectic time, and overwater bungalows and adult-only resorts are likely to get booked up fast, especially on dates after popular wedding times. If you have definite dates, book them in advance.

The place to go on a honeymoon in Fiji.

Denarau and Nadi: your arrival base

Most honeymooners begin and end their honeymoon here. It takes approximately 20 minutes to reach Denarau from Nadi Airport, where the boats to the islands sail off from. One night either side of an island stay will help minimize delays and allow you to recover from the flight. If you’re looking for a more comprehensive comparison of bases, check out where to stay in Fiji.

Mamanuca Islands

The Mamanucas are the simplest means of enjoying a perfect island honeymoon. They are approximately 20 islands located off the west coast of Viti Levu (Taveuni) from Port Denarau, which is a 30 to 90 minute boat trip. There are several resorts for adults here, with overwater bungalows, and one honeymoon guide says they find the group strikes the best balance between convenience and romance.

Yasawa Islands

The more remote and further north-west are the Yasawas. The islands are longer, but have long beaches, clear lagoons and seasonal manta ray encounters. There are even budget resorts in the group as well as high-end properties. Each resort is likely to be the sole restaurant on its island, so make sure to find out ahead of time what is offered.

Taveuni

Taveuni is in the north-east and is famous for its rainforest, waterfalls and diving. The island is located just an hour’s flight from Viti Levu. Some couples divide their holiday between Taveuni and either the Mamanucas or Yasawas to experience both nature and beach.

The Coral Coast

The southern side of Viti Levu is less remote and generally more inexpensive: the Coral Coast. It’s a go if you’re looking for a beach/sightseeing combination or prefer driving over boats. Natadola Beach guide is a good starting point for a day out with our guide.

Casinos that cater to couples are a popular option for couples.

Travel companies say several Mamanucas resorts and elsewhere are ‘adults only’ or are particularly ‘honeymoon friendly’. These recur in many published guides:

Usually said to be the pioneer of the overwater bungalows in Fiji, the Likuliku Lagoon Resort (Mamanucas) is generally considered adults-only.

  • Tokoriki Island Resort (Mamanucas): Adults Only.
  • Lomani Island Resort (Mamanucas): “Adults only” resort.
  • Matangi Private Island Resort: remote and wilder, less polished.

It’s a starting list, however, not a suggestion, and resort policies do change, so check before booking if the property is adults-only, what is included, and if the property has been renovated. When comparing, look at recent reviews and check out those that have been written by honeymooners.

There are some honeymoon resorts that are all-inclusive. Upfront is more expensive, but once you buy it, you don’t have to worry about food and drink bills, which can be helpful on islands where there’s no place else to get food.

These proposed packages are only suggestions, and not guaranteed. It’s about 0.5 days to travel between islands, so if there are fewer bases, it’s a more relaxing trip.

7 nights: one island

Nights Where Notes
1 Denarau or Nadi Recover from the flight, short transfer to the boat
6 Mamanuca beachfront villa or overwater bure Overwater bure or beachfront villa
2. Denarau or Nadi Buffer before return flight home to the airport

10 nights: two stays

Look at the transfer routes if you wish to have more than one group of islands. The ferry service is available between the Yasawas and the Mamanucas from Port Denarau; however, Taveuni requires a domestic flight.

How much a Fiji honeymoon costs

There is a broad range of published estimates, and they differ in their scope. According to one guide, the median cost is about $3,000 – $10,000 per person based on quality and duration. Yet another one has luxury, all-inclusive resorts ranging from US$800 to US$1,500 or higher per night. Source flights and meals/extras are not exact and should be used only as a guide.

As the title suggests, the expenses that regularly trip couples up:

  • Boat and small aircraft transfers can be very costly, especially private transfers.
  • Meals: Most of the time, you eat at your resort on remote islands, so you’ll need to find out if you’ll be getting meals.
  • Activities and spa: dives, excursions, and treatments are almost always an added expense.
  • Higher prices during peak seasons: school holidays and after popular wedding season.

Some strategies for saving money include traveling in a shoulder month, booking a higher-priced resort and then staying at a more affordable base hotel, or an all-inclusive package for those who are concerned about food and drink expenses. Our daily budget guide looks at the costs at various levels.

When booking, tell them that you are on your honeymoon. Some resorts include a welcome drink, beach dinner, or room upgrade (not always available).

Romantic things to do in Fiji

  • Private beach dinner. Numerous resorts provide one, and it is one of the popular honeymoon extras.
  • Snorkelling and diving. Nearshore reefs are available at many resorts for snorkelling, and dive trips are available for hire.
  • Manta ray swims. Seasonal in Yasawas, so don’t book until you check out the season.
  • Spa days. Most upscale resorts offer a spa, and couples’ treatment is the norm.

A visit to a village or kava ceremony. Before attending the kava ceremony or Fijian cultural experiences, read our guides to the experience so you know what to expect.

Planning checklist

  • Please ensure that you have the correct passport for entry to Fiji, as requirements may change; please check with the official Fiji government sources.
  • Plan travel insurance including medical evacuation in case of a medical emergency, as some islands are a considerable distance from hospital services.
  • Bring insect repellents and sun protection. In some areas, mosquitoes are present, so please consult local health officials or your doctor or travel clinic for current health recommendations.
  • Bring lighter equipment when moving to or from a boat or small aircraft, as they may have strict baggage limits.
  • Have some FJD cash to give for tips and small amenities.
  • If you’re thinking about getting married in Fiji, please note that the process is different from this guide and is a legal process on its own. Please verify with authorities or the resort’s wedding coordinator.
  • Read our airport transfer guide to find out how to get from the airport to the marina.

FAQs

What is the best duration of a honeymoon in Fiji?

For most couples, seven to ten nights is a good length of time. Bookings for long-haul flights and transfers by boat take at least one day at either end, and a week feels rushed if not enough to see more than one island.

When is the best time to go on a honeymoon to Fiji?

The dry season, from May to October, is considered safe for weather conditions, and May and October are recommended for fewer crowds. The wetter months are from November to April and are somewhat prone to cyclones.

What is the price of a honeymoon in Fiji?

A resort- and season-dependent factor. One article calculates the price of the trip to be approximately USD 3,000 to USD 10,000 per person, while luxury all-inclusive resorts have been quoted at USD 800 to USD 1,500 per night or more. Please note that transfers, meals, and activities can alter the total, so please price the trip before you choose.

What is the best Fiji island to go for a honeymoon?

This is because the Mamanucas are also the easiest and the most popular, as there are short transfers and good adult-only resorts. The Yasawas are quieter and more secluded, and Taveuni is most ideal for nature and diving. There is no one right or wrong solution, just the right one for your priorities.

Are there any adult-only resorts worth going to?

Yes, if you want a romantic, quiet, and no-children-involved scenario. Adults-only resorts tend to be more intimate and provide more personalised service. They are typically priced higher, so check out the family-friendly resorts with less lively an edge or private villas.

Will I have to book bungalows over water in advance?

Yes. They are in short supply and will sell out for busy wedding weeks, especially post popular wedding weeks. Make sure to book early, and find out about cancellation policies.

Is a honeymoon in Fiji affordable?

Yes, with trade-offs. Rates at Nadi, Coral Coast, or budget Yasawa and Mamanuca resorts are much less expensive than a luxury island, and you can do one luxury night or one short base and then afford the lower rates. Look at the goods and services first before comparing costs.

Can one go on a Honeymoon to remote islands?

Most resorts are established, but there are no hospitals on remote islands, and heavy seas may delay boats. Remove insurance, which includes medical evacuation and delayed flights, and leave a buffer night in Nadi before heading home.

Wrapping up

The key factors of a good honeymoon in Fiji are the following: one or two bases as opposed to four, a month that isn’t in the wet season (if possible), and a buffer night at the end of the trip after you’ve actually read about the resort’s inclusions.
