The answer to where to stay in Fiji mostly hinges on one question: how much of your holiday are you willing to spend getting there? There are over 300 islands in Fiji, but 4 areas are the most popular choices. The main island, Viti Levu, includes Denarau and the Coral Coast. There are island groups to the west, Mamanucas and Yasawas, accessible by boat from Port Denarau.
They are all very practical bases in Nadi, and very different. This guide makes them head-to-head when it comes to how they get there, who they’re for, and some potential pitfalls. Please remember: transfer times, prices, and boat schedules are subject to change and should be double-checked before booking.
The short version
- Denarau: very easy. Resort style, near the airport, family-friendly, short stays.
- Coral Coast: beaches, villages and sights on the mainland, longer drives and a variety of prices.
- The closest true island stays are 30-90 minutes by boat, at Mamanucas.
- Yasawas: further from the beaten track (a long boat ride away) and the most far-and-wide from backpacker to luxury. Best if 5 days or more.

Denarau
Denarau is an island resort that is privately owned and connected by road to the mainland just to the west of Nadi. It is where you’ll find a group of large, international-style resorts, a golf and racquet club, restaurants and shops, and Port Denarau Marina, where ferries and island cruises depart. The marina is about a 20-minute drive from the Nadi International Airport.
Why stay here: You land, and within half an hour you are at your resort, and everything else is near. It’s also a great destination at the end of an island trip, to spend a night or two here before heading out in the early morning by boat, and then at the end of an island trip before you head home.
Watch out: Denarau is a redeveloped enclave, and so it is somewhat sterile and not really local. Abandoned hotels are more expensive than the hotels in Nadi town, where you can only find a bed close to the airport and marina. For village life, or a wild coastline, you’ll need to go off the island.

Coral Coast
Small bays, beaches fringed with coral, and a line of resorts line the southern coast of Viti Levu for about 80 kilometres along the Coral Coast. This will vary depending on the location, as it may take between 45 minutes and two hours from Nadi Airport.
Why stay here: Fiji’s most popular place for families. The reef is near the shore, and snorkelling and glass-bottom boat trips are available, and it is close to villages, pottery, and day trips. Natadola Beach is located at the western end and is an easy outing; read on to learn more about our Natadola Beach day trip guide.
Be aware of variations in quality. Some resorts here are old-fashioned and do not keep up with the times, so check more recent reviews; don’t take the word of the stars. The Coral Coast is also not an ideal place from which to travel to other islands, as boats depart from Port Denarau and not all ferry services pick up from the Coral Coast. Then if you are looking for the beach and islands, make it a second trip – the Coral Coast.
Mamanuca Islands
The Mamanucas are a string of some 20 islands off the west coast of Viti Levu and are the closest island resorts to Nadi. Ships depart from Port Denarau, and the cruise length is approximately 30 to 90 minutes depending on the island and the ship. There are several ferry and water taxi operators as well as some resorts offering their own transfers.
Why to stay here: This is the simplest way to obtain a great island stay without a long trip. The group is popular for water sports, has famous surf breaks and dive sites, and offers a wide variety of accommodation ranging from cheap bures to luxury resorts.
Be aware of additional delays and expenses involved with transfers, and the fact that rough weather can interfere with transfers. Boat transfers from the resort are not always free, and can run at around FJ$150 to FJ$300 ( Ferry tickets are cheaper). Be sure to read a recent review and photo before you book the cheaper “island” resorts that are closer to the mainland.
Yasawa Islands
Further north-west are the Yasawas, which are quite remote. The catamaran, Yasawa Flyer, sails daily from Port Denarau to the islands, stopping at one stop on the chain each day. The ferry ride to the outer islands takes about 3 hours or more. Accommodation varies from backpacker resorts to some of the most luxurious resorts in Fiji.
Why stay here: quiet beaches, clear water and an abundance of snorkelling, all set apart from the bustle of the mainland. The 5-day hop-on hop-off passes allow for longer trips, with the option of hopping between islands.
To look out for: no restaurants, bars, or nightlife here. The boat departure time is set, and if you miss the boat time is waiting for the next boat time. Some resorts will provide a small boat to pick you up from the ferry for a fee; inquire before you book. In a recent news report, a five-day Bula Pass was reported to be around NZ$195, with 15-day passes listed at approximately FJ$535 to FJ$575 – but confirm the current price.
How to choose where to stay in Fiji
- Newbies: try Denarau or the Mamanucas. They both offer shorter transfers and lots of resort facilities.
- Families with young children go to Denarau and the Coral Coast, as it is easier to manage and there are medical facilities and supermarkets nearby. Long days of boat trips are stressful with little ones.
- Honeymooning couples and couples: the Mamanucas are the closest to an island feeling on private land available, and the outer Yasawas are the closest to complete seclusion available at a price for the ride to the island.
- If you’re on a budget, the Yasawas, the Coral Coast and Nadi town offer budget-friendly options. Use our daily budget guide and the hidden gems in Fiji on a budget post to help plan.
- Short stays or layovers – stay on Denarau or in Nadi. Half a day is consumed on both ends when something is related to a boat or a long drive.
Combining areas
Many trips employ two bases, such as a couple of nights on the Coral Coast before or after a stay on the Island or a night in Denarau before or after a stay in the Mamanucas or Yasawas. You will be spending about half a day per move, so for a week or less, it’s probably best to just choose one area and do it right.
If you return home from an island holiday straight after, make sure you book your final night close to the airport. There’s a chance that the boat will be delayed or cancelled if the weather is rough, and you don’t want your flight to be affected by that.
When to go
Cyclone season is November to April, and these are the wetter months of the year. During this time, boats can be displaced due to heavy weather and resorts can be closed, which is more important for the islands than for Denarau or the Coral Coast. The school vacation periods in Australia and New Zealand tend to be busier and more costly. Please note that dates and cancellation terms are subject to change, particularly for stays on islands.
Practical tips
- Make reservations for transfers in advance and double-check the departure time and location at Port Denarau.
- Bring light equipment to transfer to and from the boat or small aircraft. Strict baggage limits are in place on some helicopters and small boats.
- Look at the recent reviews, not the headline rating – for older Coral Coast resorts and budget properties in the islands.
- Have a little bit of FJD money for tips, village visits and for small purchases. Not all the islands have ATM facilities.
- Don’t connect your trip tightly; leave some space at both ends.
FAQs
Which is the most suitable area for tourists to visit Fiji for the first time?
Denarau and the Mamanucas are the simplest. Short transfers, lots of resort facilities, and a stay on the island without a long trip are what Denarau and the Mamanucas have to offer.
Should you stay at Denarau?
Convenient and well-equipped, it’s a great choice for short stays, for families, and to stay the night before or after an island trip. Nadi town, or the Coral Coast, may be a better choice if you’re looking for a local atmosphere or the best deals.
Which is better, Coral Coast or Denarau for the family?
Both work well. The Coral Coast is more spread out and has ease of access to the reef and village visits, whereas Denarau is nearer the airport, with more on-site facilities. It really is a matter of how one would like to arrive and what one prefers when it comes time to rest.
How far are the Mamanucas from Nadi?
Road transport to Port Denarau and then taking a boat (approx. 30 minutes to 90 minutes on the islands). Depending on the resort, they may provide their own transfers, so inquire at the time of booking.
Which shall I take, the Mamanucas or the Yasawas?
If you’re looking for a quicker, more comfortable transfer, along with a large selection of resorts, then choose the Mamanucas. The Yasawas are for those who have 5 days or more, don’t care for a long boat ride, and want a more remote place to stay, and it is quieter.
Do I have to be close to Nadi airport?
Not for the entire journey, but a good idea for at least one night before an early boat or a flight home. Denarau and Nadi town are both close to the airport and the marina.
Is it possible to go to more than one area in one trip?
Yes, and many visitors do, but it takes about half a day per move. One base is typically sufficient for trips of less than a week.
Where to stay in Fiji on a budget?
Nadi town is more affordable than Denarau; there are some mid-range and budget choices available on the Coral Coast, and backpacker resorts are available on the Yasawas and some Mamanuca Islands. See what is included, as island resorts may have additional fees for food and transportation.
Wrapping up
Deciding where to stay in Fiji isn’t the right answer; it’s the right balance for your Fiji vacation. Denarau is simple, the Coral Coast is more of a mainland option, the Mamanucas are the easiest way to reach an island, and the Yasawas are for those who have time to reach the islands.
